Valentine's Day came a day late this year as Rod Laver Arena hosted Michael Bublé on February 15th. The debonaire performer from Vancouver serenaded the capacity crowd from beginning to end with his soulful voice and quirky but charming dance moves.
The show began with his upbeat hit "Haven't Met You Yet". This was followed by a combination of original songs and classic covers that included: "When I Fall in Love", "My Funny Valentine", "Fly Me to the Moon" and the cheeky "Just a Gigolo" to name a few.
Before he performed his original song "Forever Now" he explained that it was written for his unborn child about the uncertainties of parenthood. By the end of the song, there was hardly a dry eye in the arena.
His appreciation of the audience was evident as he skipped up and down interacting with his delighted fans, giving them high fives and taking selfies on their phones. He even chose one lucky fan, a lady named Lorraine, to sing something to the audience. She chose a number from The Greatest Showman and, while obviously nervous, the audience cheered and encourage her through. Her performance appeared to inspire the crowd as shortly after the whole stadium stood up and sang an impromptu version of "Advance Australia Fair".
Michael spoke fondly of his grandfather who passed away just before the New Year. He credited this man to his taste in music, and his humble beginnings on the cabaret circuit in Canada when he was 16. He also spoke of his love of performing and wanting to spread kindness throughout the world with his music.
In his typical charismatic way, he made a large audience feel like they were part of an intimate experience. His final song of the night was the Elvis Presley classic "Love Me Tender" which set off the waterworks in the audience again. Those who came to see a concert ended up on a roller coaster ride of emotions. From excitement to heartbreak, from laughter to tears, and finally falling in love all over again.
